Authorities Advise Precautionary Steps as Bears Emerge from Hibernation
Residents in the Northeast of Ontario are advised by the Ontario government and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to take precautionary measures to prevent attracting black bears as they exit hibernation. Typically, black bears emerge between mid-March and late April, during which they may seek food sources in residential areas, such as unsecured garbage or bird feeders, due to the scarcity of natural food.
To minimize the risk of bear interactions, residents should ensure garbage is stored securely, bird feeders are removed, and outdoor grills are kept clean. These preventive steps are part of broader efforts to maintain safety and reduce bear encounters.
The Bear Wise reporting line is available through the Ministry of Natural Resources for guidance related to bear encounters during daylight hours. In any situation where personal safety is threatened by bear activity, it is recommended to contact emergency services by dialing 911.
This advisory underscores the collaboration between communities and authorities to ensure public safety while supporting wildlife management practices in Northern Ontario.
