Canada Imposes Tariffs on $155 Billion U.S. Goods
Canada has initiated a 25% tariff on $155 billion worth of U.S. imports. This decision is a response to tariffs introduced by the United States on Canadian products.
Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that these tariffs will be rolled out in two stages. The first stage, affecting $30 billion in goods, starts on February 4, 2025. Further tariffs, impacting $125 billion worth of products, will be implemented following a 21-day public consultation period.
The range of affected items includes electronics, vehicles, and agricultural goods. In official statements, LeBlanc and Joly explained that these measures are aimed at safeguarding Canadian industries from the economic consequences of U.S. tariffs.
LeBlanc stated, "This first set of countermeasures is about protecting—and supporting—Canada’s interests, workers, and industries." Joly affirmed, "Canada commits to responding to U.S. tariffs with protective measures."
