Canadian Payroll Employment Increases by 32,800 in July 2024
Statistics Canada reports that payroll employment in Canada rose by 32,800 jobs in July 2024, reflecting a 0.2% increase after a decline in June. Over the past year, payroll employment has grown by 157,700 jobs, or 0.9%.
The health care and social assistance sector led the growth with an addition of 17,600 jobs, marking a 0.7% increase. Public administration added 8,000 jobs, a 0.6% rise, while retail trade saw a slight increase of 2,300 jobs, or 0.1%.
In contrast, the manufacturing sector experienced a reduction of 6,200 jobs, a 0.4% decrease. The construction sector and administrative and support, waste management and remediation services each lost 2,400 jobs, representing declines of 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively.
Job vacancies decreased by 22,400, a 4.1% drop, bringing the total number of vacancies to 526,900 in July. This marks the third consecutive month of declining job vacancies, according to Statistics Canada.
