Canadian Scientists Set for Antarctic Research Expedition

Canadian scientists are preparing to embark on a significant research mission to the Antarctic, as announced on February 21, 2025. The mission will involve 15 scientists traveling aboard His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Margaret Brooke from Punta Arenas, Chile, set to depart on February 23. This research aims to explore various aspects of climate change and its effects on the Antarctic environment, specifically in the South Shetland Islands and the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.

The scientific study, part of Operation PROJECTION 2025-01, will focus on areas such as climate change impacts, glacial retreat, and marine ecosystem pollution. This venture includes collaboration from multiple Canadian entities: Natural Resources Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and five universities from across the country. The initiative is supported by Polar Knowledge Canada, with logistical backing from the Department of National Defence, Canadian Joint Operations Command, and the Royal Canadian Navy.
