CFIA issues recall warning for raw pistachio kernels sold at New Westminster store over Salmonella risk

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a food recall warning on Nov. 7 for unbranded raw pistachio kernels sold at Persian Baanou Supermarket, 220 6th St., New Westminster, B.C., due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Distribution is limited to British Columbia. No illnesses have been reported. Salmonella infections can be more serious for older adults, according to the agency.

The affected product is raw pistachio kernels with no brand name, sold in variable weights of about 272 grams with no UPC. The nuts were sold from May 13 through Nov. 6, 2025, at Persian Baanou Supermarket. The recalling firm is Persian Baanou Supermarket.

CFIA advises people not to consume, use, sell, serve or distribute the recalled product and to throw it out or return it to the place of purchase. The agency also advises anyone who thinks they became sick after consuming the product to contact a healthcare provider. Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled.

Short‑term symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Young children, pregnant women, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious infection. Long‑term complications may include severe arthritis.

CFIA said its test results triggered the recall. The agency is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to other recalls and is verifying that industry is removing the product from the marketplace. The recall is classified as Class 2. The alert identification number is RA-78473. CFIA lists the original publication date as Nov. 7, 2025. The alert is categorized as a food recall warning in the nuts, grains and seeds category.
