CFIA recalls Al Kanater halawa with pistachio over possible Salmonella contamination
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has recalled Al Kanater brand Halawa with Pistachio (450 g) because of possible Salmonella contamination. The CFIA posted the recall Feb. 7 and said the product was distributed nationally.
People who have this product at home may not be able to tell by sight or smell whether it is contaminated. The CFIA said food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.
The affected product is Al Kanater Halawa with Pistachio, 450 g, with UPC 6 92551 00006 8. The codes listed by the CFIA are Best before 2027 MR 12 and Lot: H51203.
The recall was triggered by test results, the CFIA said.
The CFIA said consumers should not consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled product. The agency said the product should be thrown out or returned to the location where it was purchased.
The CFIA said young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may be more likely to develop serious and sometimes deadly infections. The agency said healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. The CFIA said long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
The CFIA said it has not received reports of illness linked to the product.
The agency said it is conducting a food-safety investigation that may lead to the recall of other products, and it is verifying that industry is removing the recalled product from the marketplace.
The recalling firm is Phoenicia Group Inc. The recall identification number is RA-81577.
