CFIA Recalls Al Mokhtar Food Centre Pistachios Sold in Ottawa for Salmonella Risk

A 450 g package of Al Mokhtar Food Centre brand pistachios is being recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The recalled product was sold at 383 McArthur Avenue in Ottawa, Ontario, and can be identified by UPC code 2 60164 54022 8. The recall notice specifies that there are no additional product codes related to this product.

The CFIA announced the recall on July 30, 2025, following findings during an investigation linked to a foodborne illness outbreak. Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can cause illness if consumed. The CFIA states that young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for severe infection. Symptoms described by the agency include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. As of the recall date, the agency reports that no illnesses have been connected to this product.

According to the CFIA, this recall forms part of a broader ongoing food safety investigation, which could result in further product recalls. The agency has stated it is currently verifying that recalled pistachios are being removed from the marketplace by the relevant businesses. Distribution of the affected pistachios has been limited to Ontario.

The CFIA advises the public not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled pistachios. The agency further advises that recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased. The CFIA has also announced a related recall of Habibi brand Pistachio Kernel due to similar concerns. The food safety investigation is ongoing.
