CFIA recalls Auricchio Taleggio cheese sold in Ontario over possible Listeria

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recalled Auricchio Taleggio D.O.P. Cheese (200 g; UPC 8 004603 104099) sold in Ontario because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The agency’s food recall warning is dated April 2.

The CFIA says pregnant women, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk from Listeria infection.

The CFIA’s notice lists the affected product as Auricchio Taleggio D.O.P. Cheese in a 200 g package with code L 2533700 and best-before date 2026 JL 20.

The recalling firm is Tree of Life Canada ULC. The CFIA says the recall was triggered by CFIA test results, and it reports no illnesses linked to the product.

The CFIA advises people not to consume, use, sell, serve or distribute the recalled cheese. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased, the agency says.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make people sick, the CFIA says. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. The CFIA says infected pregnant women may have mild, flu-like symptoms, but the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or stillbirth; in severe cases, people may die.

The CFIA says it is conducting a food safety investigation and that additional recalls may follow. The agency also says it is verifying that industry is removing the recalled product from the marketplace.

The recall is classified as Class 1 and listed under identification number RA-81843.
