CFIA recalls Coaticook white cheddar products in Quebec over possible Listeria contamination

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) posted a food recall warning on Aug. 3 for several Coaticook brand white cheddar products distributed in Quebec due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The warning matters for older adults and others at higher risk of serious illness. The CFIA says pregnant women, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to listeriosis.

The recalled products include multiple sizes of Coaticook “Mild Cheddar Curds – white” and “Mild Cheddar Curds – white (double cut),” including 50 g, 80 g, 85 g, 12 x 85 g, 200 g, 400 g, 600 g, 1 kg and 2 kg packages. The recall list also includes flavoured versions of “Mild Cheddar Curds – white” labelled Dill, Spices, Hickory and Onion in 200 g and 400 g sizes.

Also included is “Carrousel Mild Cheddar Curds – white (plain, dill, spices, hickory, onions)” in an 800 g package.

For the curd products, the code on the affected packages is: “À réfrigérer après le 24JL26 / meilleur avant 07AU26.”

The recall also covers Coaticook “Mild Cheddar – white (block)” in 50 g, 180 g, 320 g, 2 x 320 g, 1.15 kg and 2.27 kg sizes. The code on the affected packages is: “À réfrigérer après le 24JL2026 / meilleur avant 22OC26.”

In addition, the CFIA list includes Coaticook “Mild Cheddar – white (block) (non-salted)” sold in approximate weights (about 150 g, 200 g and 1 kg), and “Mild Cheddar – white (block) (semi-pressed)” sold in approximate weights (about 200 g) and as an approximate 1/4 wheel. The code on the affected packages is: “À réfrigérer après le 24JL2026 / meilleur avant 05AU26.”

The CFIA says people should not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute the recalled products. The agency says recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.

The CFIA says food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make people sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. The CFIA says infected pregnant women may have mild, flu-like symptoms, but the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or stillbirth. In severe cases, the CFIA says people may die.

The CFIA says the recall was triggered by the company, Laiterie de Coaticook Limitée, and that no illnesses have been reported. The agency says it is conducting a food safety investigation and checking that recalled products are being removed from the marketplace.
