CFIA Recalls Multiple Pistachio Products in Ontario for Possible Salmonella Contamination

Several varieties of pistachios have been recalled in Ontario and Quebec due to possible Salmonella contamination, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The recall, announced on September 11, 2025, covers Nutrifresh brand pistachios and certain clerk-served pistachios sold at a retailer in Laval, Quebec.

The CFIA stated that the recall is part of an ongoing investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. The agency advises the public not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute any of the recalled products.

The following pistachio products are affected:

  • Nutrifresh Green Pista (variable sizes, in bags, with or without code 306.24IR41), sold up to and including August 26, 2025.
  • Nutrifresh Green Pistachio (variable sizes, in bags, with or without code 306.24IR41), sold up to and including August 26, 2025.
  • Nutrifresh Pistachio Vert (variable sizes, in bags, with or without code 306.24IR41), sold up to and including August 26, 2025.
  • Clerk-served pistachios (no brand, variable sizes) sold from June 19 up to and including August 30, 2025, at Choco Noix, 3652 boul. de la Concorde E, Laval, Quebec.

No Universal Product Codes (UPCs) are listed for the recalled bagged pistachio products.

According to the CFIA, food contaminated with Salmonella may not show visible signs of spoilage but can still cause illness. Those most at risk include young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may also be affected, with symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.

The CFIA reported that the recall was triggered by its findings during a food safety investigation. The Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating an outbreak of human illness in connection with the recall. The CFIA notes additional recalls may follow as the investigation continues and says it is working to ensure the recalled products are removed from the marketplace.
