CFIA recalls Salem Foods spices over undeclared wheat

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says Salem Foods brand 7 Spices and Chicken Shawarma Spices are being recalled from the marketplace because the products may contain undeclared wheat. The food recall warning was originally published March 19, 2026, and the products were distributed nationally.

For people with a wheat allergy or sensitivity, or those with celiac disease or other gluten-related disorders, the CFIA says consuming the recalled spices may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction.

The CFIA listed the following affected products:

  • Salem Foods 7 Spices (200 g) — UPC 8 25685 00147 6; code BN: 249; best before JAN/22/2028
  • Salem Foods Chicken Shawarma Spices (200 g) — UPC 8 25685 00148 3; code BN: 251; best before JAN/23/2028

According to the CFIA, the recall was triggered by the agency’s test results. The CFIA also reported that no reactions have been reported in connection with consumption of these products.

The CFIA said it is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. The agency also said it is verifying that industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.

The recalling firm is listed as 1690161 Ontario Inc. The CFIA classified the recall as Class 1 and assigned identification number RA-81771.

The CFIA advises consumers to check product labels for the UPC and best-before dates listed in the recall notice. The agency says the recalled products should not be served, used, sold or distributed, and should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.
