CFIA warns ByHeart infant formula sold online may be unsafe; all unexpired 'Use By' dates
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a food safety warning on Nov. 14, 2025, advising the public not to consume ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula sold online in Canada because of potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum. The warning covers 680 g and 238 g packages with any unexpired “Use By” date.
According to the agency, food contaminated with botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled and can cause severe illness. No illnesses in Canada have been reported to date. The warning was triggered by a recall in another country.
CFIA lists the following products as affected:
- ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula, 680 g, UPC 8 50044 96800, all unexpired “Use By” codes
- ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula, 238 g, UPC 8 50044 96802, all unexpired “Use By” codes
The agency is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of these or other products. Distribution for the affected products is online.
CFIA advises checking at home for the affected products and not consuming, serving, using, selling or distributing them. The agency also advises anyone who thinks they became sick after consuming an affected product to contact a healthcare provider.
Symptoms described by the agency for foodborne botulism in adults can include facial paralysis or loss of facial expression, unreactive or fixed pupils, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, difficulty speaking, slurred speech, and a change in voice such as hoarseness. Symptoms in children can include difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, generalized weakness and paralysis. Botulism does not cause a fever. In severe cases, illness can be fatal.
