CFIA warns of possible Listeria in CO-OP Creamy Garlic and Spinach Salad
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a food recall warning on April 3, 2026, for CO-OP brand Creamy Garlic and Spinach Salad because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The CFIA said the product was distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan.
For Northeast Ontario residents, the recall notice does not list Ontario among the distribution areas. However, the CFIA warns that food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled and can still cause illness.
The recalled item is CO-OP Creamy Garlic and Spinach Salad, sold in variable amounts as a clerk-served product. According to the CFIA, the UPC starts with 0 284616 and the best-before dates range from 24.MAR.2026 to 04.APR.2026. The agency said it was sold at CO-OP locations in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories.
The CFIA said people should not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute the recalled product. The agency said recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.
The CFIA said symptoms of listeria infection can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk, the agency said. The CFIA said infected pregnant women may have mild, flu-like symptoms, but the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or stillbirth; in severe cases, people may die.
The CFIA said the recall was triggered by the company. The recalling firm is Federated Co-Operatives Limited. As of April 3, 2026—the date of the recall—the CFIA said there had been no reported illnesses linked to the product.
The CFIA said it is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of other products. It also said it is verifying that industry is removing the recalled product from the marketplace.
