Cochrane Public Library board has one vacancy, town notice says
A notice posted by the Town of Cochrane on April 10 says the Cochrane Public Library Board of Trustees has one vacancy, with about eight months left in the current term.
The library board oversees how the public library is governed and has legal responsibility to ensure the library operates under Ontario’s Public Libraries Act.
The town’s notice says library board terms run concurrently with municipal council.
The notice points to Section 20 of the Public Libraries Act, which sets out the board’s responsibilities. These include working with other library boards to provide library service that reflects community needs and providing French-language library services where appropriate.
Under the Act, the board is also responsible for operating one or more libraries in accordance with the legislation and regulations, setting the times and places for board meetings and ensuring accurate minutes are kept.
The Act also requires the board to make an annual report to the minister and any other reports required by the legislation or requested by the minister, according to the notice.
Other duties listed in the notice include arranging insurance for the board’s property and taking proper security for the treasurer. The Act also allows the board to operate special services connected to a library and to appoint committees, the notice says.
