CRTC Announces Interim Rates for Fibre Network Access

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has announced interim wholesale rates for competitors accessing large telephone companies' fibre networks. This decision is part of the CRTC's ongoing efforts to enhance competition in the Canadian internet market. The interim rates are based on detailed costing information provided by the telephone companies and are intended to reflect the actual costs of building fibre networks.

The CRTC's decision follows previous actions taken in November 2023 and August 2024, which aimed to increase access to fibre networks in Ontario and Quebec, and subsequently across Canada. The CRTC has mandated that access to these networks be provided by February 13, 2025.

The interim rates are designed to allow competitors to offer more internet service options, potentially leading to increased choice and affordability for consumers. The CRTC will continue to work with large telephone companies to finalize these rates in the coming months.

Vicky Eatrides, Chairperson and CEO of the CRTC, stated that the decision is expected to provide Canadians with new options for internet, television, home phone, and smart home services. The CRTC is an independent tribunal that regulates the Canadian communications sector and holds public consultations on telecommunications and broadcasting matters.
