Fire at Schumacher multi-unit building on Lion’s Crest Lane under control by 11 p.m. Feb. 16

Timmins Fire Department crews brought a fire at a two-storey, multi-unit residential building on Lion’s Crest Lane in Schumacher under control at about 11 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, according to a city news release.

The department said residents from the building’s main-floor and basement units evacuated before crews arrived. As of Tuesday morning (Feb. 17), Timmins Fire Department investigators were still on scene to gather evidence and determine the cause.

The department said crews from Stations 3 and 5 responded and saw fire at the back of the building.

According to the release, first-arriving firefighters began an interior attack on a second-floor unit while checking to ensure no occupants remained inside.

Once crews confirmed all occupants had left the structure, they moved to a defensive exterior attack because of rapid fire spread and structural instability, the department said. The release said additional crews from Station 1 were requested to provide aerial apparatus support.

The fire department said it has no reason to believe the fire is suspicious.

The department also reminded residents to ensure working smoke alarms are installed on all levels of a home and outside sleeping areas.
