Funding Announced for Critical Minerals Projects in Northern Ontario

The Government of Canada has announced plans to support critical minerals development in Northern Ontario through the Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund (CMIF). This initiative is part of the broader Critical Minerals Strategy launched in December 2022. The strategy aims to enhance clean energy and transportation infrastructure to boost Canada's critical mineral production.

Key projects include:

  • Green TM Resources Canada Ltd: Plans to upgrade 112 kilometers of roads and replace three bridges near Armstrong, Ontario, to support a lithium mine development. The project is expected to improve road access and increase lithium supply, in collaboration with the Whitesand First Nation.
  • Rock Tech Lithium Inc.: Proposes to extend a 10-kilometer access road and bridge north of Nipigon, Ontario, to facilitate lithium transport from the Georgia Lake Project. This project aims to enhance lithium production and contribute to the electric vehicle value chain.
  • Frontier Lithium Inc.: Plans two projects for the Pakeagama (PAK) Lithium Project in Northwestern Ontario. These include developing a 56-kilometer access road and conducting studies for a substation and transmission line to connect to the Wataynikaneyap Power line. These projects aim to improve regional access and electrification.
  • Generation PGM Inc.: Plans to conduct feasibility studies for road and rail links to transport copper from a mining project near Marathon, Ontario. The project includes upgrading a site access road and developing a new access road and transload facility.

These projects are pending final due diligence and have received conditional approval for funding under the CMIF, totaling several million dollars in investments.
