Government Plans for Service Continuity Amid Potential Postal Strike
The Government of Canada has announced measures to ensure the continuation of benefits and services in the event of a Canada Post labour disruption. Canadians are encouraged to set up a My Service Canada Account (MSCA) and enroll in direct deposit to avoid delays in receiving benefits. This step is advised as the delivery of physical cheques may be affected if a postal strike occurs.
Service Canada has stated that direct deposit is already used by a majority of clients, with over 96% of Employment Insurance (EI), Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Old Age Security (OAS), and Canada Student Financial Assistance Program recipients opting for this method. In the event of a postal disruption, Canada Post has agreed to deliver cheques for socio-economic programs, such as CPP and OAS, once a month.
Service Canada has also prepared to assist clients through updated procedures and guidance at in-person service points and specialized call centres. Clients are advised to use MSCA for accessing services and managing benefits, including viewing decision letters and submitting necessary documents online.
These measures are part of the government's efforts to maintain service delivery and minimize disruption for Canadians relying on government benefits and services.
