Man Charged in Timmins Following Shooting Investigation and Vehicle Pursuit
On August 16, 2025, Timmins Police Service responded to a report of a gunshot-related injury. Officers began an investigation and identified a vehicle suspected to be connected to the incident. On August 17, officers attempted to stop this vehicle. Police say the driver fled and, for public safety reasons, no pursuit was initiated. The vehicle later struck a tree at the corner of Vimy Avenue and Waterloo Road, continued on, and eventually came to a stop on Borden Avenue.
Timmins officers reported that, at the scene, they observed the driver leaving the area. Following a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody. Police stated that a quantity of drugs and a handgun were seized during the arrest.
Derrick Wrightman, 30, of Timmins, has been charged with the following offences:
- Careless Storage of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Carry Concealed Weapon
- Dangerous Operation
- Flight from Peace Officer
- Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Weapon
- Occupant of Motor Vehicle Knowing there was Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing Serial Number has been Tampered With
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Opioid (other than heroin)
- Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
- Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
According to police, Wrightman remains in custody and was scheduled for a bail hearing on August 18, 2025.
Police stated that the investigation to identify the shooter involved in the original incident remains ongoing and the incident is believed to have been targeted. Investigators have requested that anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage from the Vimy Avenue and Waterloo Road area around 9:45 a.m. on August 17, or from Algonquin Boulevard and Fifth Avenue between Elm Street North and Cedar Street between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on August 16, submit their footage to the Timmins Police Service evidence portal.
