Measles Cases Surge in Canada with 227 Reported in Early 2025

Canada reported that measles cases have significantly increased in the early part of 2025, with 227 cases recorded by March 6, surpassing the total for the whole of 2024. This data comes from the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada, who highlighted global trends showing an increase in cases since 2024.

Recent outbreaks in New Brunswick, Ontario, Québec, and Manitoba have contributed to the rise in numbers. According to health officials, the majority of these cases involve unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children, often affected within community settings like social gatherings, daycare centers, schools, and healthcare facilities.

Health experts describe measles as highly contagious, with potential outcomes such as pneumonia, deafness, brain inflammation, and in severe cases, can be fatal. Canadian health authorities are therefore stressing the need for vaccination to contain the spread.

The Chief Public Health Officer stressed the urgency of addressing these outbreaks to prevent further health risks associated with measles.
