Mount Kumgang enoki mushrooms recalled for Listeria risk in Alberta and B.C.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a Class 2 recall on Nov. 7 for Mount Kumgang brand Enoki Mushroom (200 g) due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The product was distributed in Alberta and British Columbia, and the recalling firm is Grand International Import & Export Inc.

Older adults, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems face higher risk from Listeria infection. Contaminated food may not look or smell spoiled.

The affected product is Mount Kumgang Enoki Mushroom, 200 g, UPC 6 289427 793434, code 2514080929.

This recall is listed under identification number RA-78471 and was published Nov. 7 by the CFIA.

The CFIA advises consumers and businesses not to consume, sell, serve, use or distribute the recalled product. Recalled items should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase, and consumers should check for them at home or in businesses.

Anyone who thinks they became sick after consuming a recalled product should contact a healthcare provider, the CFIA advises. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women may have mild, flu-like symptoms, but infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or stillbirth. In severe cases, illness can be fatal.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with this product. The recall was triggered by CFIA test results. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to recalls of other products and is verifying that industry is removing recalled items from the marketplace.
