New Gun Licensing Requirements Effective September 1, 2024
Starting September 1, 2024, new firearms licensing requirements will be implemented in Canada. These changes will mandate that individuals possess a valid firearms license to acquire firearm barrels and handgun slides. The valid licenses include a Possession and Acquisition License or a confirmed Non-Resident Firearms Declaration form for non-residents. Only those with a valid license will be allowed to import firearm barrels, handgun slides, cartridge magazines, and ammunition into Canada.
These measures are part of the provisions of former Bill C-21, from December 2023. The bill introduces new terms to existing trafficking and smuggling offenses under the Criminal Code and aims to regulate the sale and importation of firearms parts and cartridge magazines. The changes are intended to make it harder for unlicensed individuals to acquire firearm components.
Businesses must confirm that a customer has a valid firearms license before selling barrels and handgun slides. Selling these items to someone without a license will be considered a criminal offense starting September 1, 2024. Non-residents must also present a valid firearm license to a Canadian border agent to import these items.
