North Bay Receives Funding for Eight Transit Infrastructure Projects

The federal, Ontario, and North Bay municipal governments have announced joint funding for eight public transit projects in North Bay, according to a backgrounder from Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada dated August 6, 2025. The federal government will provide $8,362,099, Ontario will contribute $6,896,755, and the City of North Bay will allocate $5,433,480.

These projects include sidewalk construction, transit bus replacements, facility refurbishments, and equipment upgrades for North Bay’s transit system. This funding supports multiple projects aimed at improving transit infrastructure within the city.

The largest portion of funds is designated for constructing 5.19 kilometres of 1.5-metre-wide concrete sidewalk along transit routes. This work will include the installation of storm sewers, curbs, gutters, tactile walking plates, and related infrastructure. Federal, provincial, and municipal contributions to this project are $3,937,844, $3,281,208, and $2,625,557, respectively.

Eight conventional transit buses will be replaced with hybrid models. According to the backgrounder, this project is expected to improve fuel mileage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The federal government is allocating $3,805,158, Ontario $3,170,647, and North Bay $2,537,088 for this replacement.

Facility refurbishment is also included in the plan. The transit bus wash facility will be upgraded, covering bus washing and vacuum systems, exterior bay doors and frames, and lighting. This project is funded with $270,000 from the federal government, $179,982 from Ontario, and $90,018 from North Bay.

The transit terminal will undergo upgrades to interior and exterior lighting and rehabilitation of the roof membrane, with contributions of $155,825 from the federal government, $103,872 from Ontario, and $51,952 from North Bay.

Technology and safety improvements involve upgrading automatic vehicle locator screens and installing driver barriers on about 20 buses. These upgrades are funded with $87,148 federally, $72,616 from Ontario, and $58,106 from the City. The backgrounder also lists the replacement of six bus shelters and installation of four new concrete pads at stops, receiving $67,546 federally, $56,283 from Ontario, and $45,037 from the city.

North Bay’s fare system will be upgraded with the installation of a coin sorting machine, a coin safe, and two coin wrapping machines. Funding for these improvements is $29,378 from the federal government, $24,479 from Ontario, and $19,588 from North Bay.

Lastly, approximately 56 interior and six exterior lighting fixtures at the transit bus storage facility will be replaced or upgraded to LED lighting. This final project receives $9,200 in federal funding, $7,666 from Ontario, and $6,134 from North Bay.
