North Bay Receives Over $20 Million for Transit Upgrades from All Levels of Government

A combined investment of over $20.6 million from the federal, provincial, and municipal governments will fund public transit infrastructure upgrades in North Bay, according to an official joint release issued August 6, 2025, by Member of Parliament Pauline Rochefort, Member of Provincial Parliament Vic Fedeli, and Mayor Peter Chirico.

The funding will address transit improvements that affect daily travel for many North Bay residents. These upgrades include replacing aging buses, adding new sidewalks, and making changes to the city’s stormwater system and transit terminal, all of which may have a direct impact on accessibility and reliability for local transit riders.

According to details in the government release, the spending will go toward replacing eight conventional North Bay Transit buses with hybrid models. Additional upgrades include new or improved sidewalks, stormwater system improvements, an upgraded transit terminal, and updated fare collection equipment.

Through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, the Government of Canada will provide $8,362,099. The Government of Ontario will contribute $6,896,755, and the City of North Bay will commit $5,433,480 toward these improvements. The Ontario government will also provide $784,736 to the city through its 2024–25 Gas Tax program. Provincial statements indicate that Gas Tax funds can be used by municipalities for transit projects, vehicle purchases, or increasing service levels.

No timeline for completion of these projects was provided in the official government announcement.
