Northern College breaks ground on planned 130,000-square-foot sports dome in Timmins
Northern College held a ceremonial groundbreaking March 27 for a planned 130,000-square-foot sports dome at its Timmins campus. The college said the event marks the start of site preparation, with construction expected to begin in the coming weeks.
The dome is planned as a new indoor sports and fitness space in Timmins intended for students and community use. If completed as planned, the facility would add year-round indoor space for court sports and other activities.
The province is providing $2 million toward the project through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, according to a statement from Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth George Pirie.
Northern College says the dome is planned as a multi-use facility with an adaptable layout that can be set up for different court configurations.
In a statement, Northern College President and CEO Mitch Dumas said the facility is intended to provide space for youth and for local clubs, teams and organizations.
Northern College also said the dome will be the first sports facility constructed in Timmins since 1982.
The college expects the dome to open in late 2026 or early 2027.
Northern College said it will release programming details, rental opportunities and rates closer to completion. The college has not disclosed the project’s total cost.
