Northern College expects Timmins sports dome to finish in December 2026, open in early 2027
Construction is underway on a 130,000-square-foot sports dome at Northern College’s Timmins campus, with the college expecting the facility to be completed in December 2026 and open in early 2027.
Northern College says the dome is intended for both campus and community use, including year-round access for individuals and local sports organizations.
Site preparation is underway following a ceremonial groundbreaking in late March, the college said in an April 8 news release.
Northern College puts the project cost at $20 million. The college says it will pay for part of the project from its capital reserve fund, with the rest coming from provincial and municipal governments and community and industry partners.
In the release, Northern College president and CEO Mitch Dumas said the dome will be the first sports facility built in Timmins since the Whitney Arena in 1982. Dumas also said the project will place “no additional tax burden on Timmins residents,” attributing that to how the college plans to fund construction and operations.
Northern College said it is still seeking sponsorships and other collaboration to help cover programming, activities and facility costs.
The college says the dome will be able to accommodate multiple court layouts and different sports. Northern College says it plans year-round access for individuals and groups such as community clubs, sports associations, teams and athletic camps, along with fitness facilities that would offer memberships and programming.
In the same release, Evan Sonkin, the college’s senior vice-president of corporate services, said Northern College is facing “significant reductions in revenue due to declining international enrolment.” The college estimates net new revenue from the dome may exceed $750,000 once the facility is fully operational.
Northern College said it will provide updates as construction continues, including details on programming, pricing and scheduling closer to completion.
