Northern College Hosts Skills Ontario Summer Camp for Grade 7 and 8 Students

Northern College in Timmins is hosting the 2024 Skills Ontario Technology and Trades Summer Camp. The event targets grade seven and eight students, offering them exposure to various technology and trades professions before entering high school.

The camp aims to provide hands-on experience in different trades and technology disciplines. Students will connect with Northern College professors and explore the college's facilities. According to the Skills Ontario Summer Camp, 82% of participants expressed interest in pursuing careers in skilled trades and technology, and 96% of parents indicated they would discuss these career paths with their children.

Jamie Johnston, Dean of Trades, Technology, and Apprenticeship at Northern College, stated that the program helps future secondary students make informed decisions about post-secondary career paths through hands-on experience. Jaret Dicks, Director of Marketing, Communications & External Relations, emphasized the college's mission to provide access to education and introduce potential future students to their programs and facilities.

The Government of Ontario forecasts that one in six new jobs by 2026 will be in skilled trades and technology. Northern College President & CEO Mitch Dumas highlighted the importance of such programs for regional socio-economic health and growth. He noted that the partnership with Skills Ontario helps maintain a productive pipeline for new talent, contributing to the region's future.

The camp hosted 18 students, providing them with practical experience in trades and technology, including welding.
