Northern College Participates in Indigenous Disability Awareness Month

Northern College in Timmins has announced its participation in Indigenous Disability Awareness Month. This initiative aims to support Indigenous learners, acknowledging that 30% of Indigenous Peoples in Canada live with a disability, according to Statistics Canada.

Mitch Dumas, President & CEO of Northern College, emphasized the college's commitment to Indigenous learners beyond cultural supports. Joseph Nakogee, Indigenous Student Advisor at the Timmins Campus, highlighted that Indigenous cultures often view disabilities as strengths rather than limitations.

The college is focusing on five essential actions during the month: ensuring adequate funding, improving access across sectors, engaging with communities, empowering community helpers, and investing in inclusive policy and structural change. Shawna Foy, who oversees Accessibility Services, noted the importance of shared understanding in making sincere changes to support everyone, regardless of background.

Northern College continues to align its efforts with the needs of all students, promoting accessibility and encouraging discussions on challenging topics.
