Northern Ontario Mayors Endorse Homelessness Campaign

The mayors of Greater Sudbury, North Bay, Timmins, Thunder Bay, and Sault Ste. Marie have endorsed the 'Solve the Crisis' campaign initiated by Ontario's Big City Mayors. They are urging the Government of Ontario to adopt the campaign's recommended actions to address the homelessness crisis.

The Northern Ontario Large Urban Mayors (NOLUM) municipalities are facing increasing challenges related to homelessness. Despite efforts, these municipalities lack sufficient government support to manage the issue effectively. The campaign's recommendations include appointing a provincial minister to focus on homelessness, creating a task force with diverse stakeholders, and providing municipalities with resources for housing and crisis response services.

The mayors emphasized the need for provincial and federal support to implement these measures. They highlighted that homelessness is not only an issue in larger cities but also affects small to mid-sized municipalities in Northern Ontario.
