Observance of National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

On December 6, communities across Canada observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day marks the anniversary of the tragic event at Polytechnique Montréal in 1989, where 14 women were killed. The day serves as a reminder of the impact of gender-based violence and the need for continued efforts to address this issue.

The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women encourages individuals to reflect on the violence faced by women and to take action to prevent it. Activities suggested for this day include wearing a white ribbon, observing a moment of silence at 11:00 am, attending community vigils, and engaging in discussions about gender-based violence.

The day is part of a broader campaign known as the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which runs from November 25 to December 10. This campaign aims to raise awareness and encourage actions to end violence against women and girls.

In Smooth Rock Falls and other parts of Northeast Ontario, local organizations and community members participate in events and initiatives to honor the victims and support survivors of gender-based violence. These efforts are part of a nationwide commitment to creating a safer and more equitable society for all.
