Ontario Allocates $17 Million for Seniors Centres Expansion

The Ontario government has announced plans to increase funding for Seniors Active Living Centres (SALCs) by $17 million over the next three years. This funding aims to expand the number of SALCs from 316 to 416 across the province, including areas in the Northeast. The expansion is intended to improve access to services for seniors and individuals with disabilities, particularly in underserved communities.

A call for proposals was initiated in July 2024, with successful applicants expected to be announced in early 2025. The expansion will allow various organizations, such as municipalities, non-profit corporations, registered charities, Indigenous groups, Legions, Lions Clubs, and recreational clubs, to deliver SALC programs. These changes follow amendments to the Seniors Active Living Centres Act, 2017, which came into effect on June 1, 2024, enabling more types of organizations to contribute to the operating costs of SALC programs.

The funding increase was approved in the 2024 Fall Economic Statement, and SALC programs will now be able to request up to $55,000 for maintenance and operating costs, an increase from the previous maximum of $50,000 in 2024 and $42,700 in 2023. This initiative is part of a broader effort to support Ontario's aging population and enhance community services for seniors.
