Ontario Announces Expansion of Palliative Care Services
The Ontario government has announced plans to expand access to palliative care by adding up to 84 new adult hospice beds and 12 pediatric hospice beds across the province. This initiative aims to increase the total number of publicly funded hospice beds in Ontario to 768.
The funding for this expansion is part of Ontario's 2024 budget, with an allocation of up to $19.75 million in capital funding. An Expression of Interest (EOI) for the new adult hospice beds has been opened, with the expectation that the beds will be operational by 2027. Existing hospice residences and other applicants interested in developing or expanding hospice beds are encouraged to contact their local Ontario Health Region for further details.
Since 2018, Ontario has invested over $26.5 million to add 153 new hospice beds. Additionally, ten new pediatric hospice beds have been added at Keaton's House in Hamilton and two at Roger Neilson Children's Hospice in Ottawa.
The Ontario government is also increasing funding for all hospice beds across the province by 45%, as part of a broader investment of up to $147.4 million over three years to enhance access to palliative care services. This integrated form of care is designed to improve the quality of life for individuals facing serious illnesses, ensuring they have access to necessary supports during challenging times.
The Ontario Palliative Care Network (OPCN), led by Ontario Health, is involved in developing a coordinated approach to palliative care, which includes partnerships with various health service providers, community organizations, and patient advisors.
