Ontario Contracts Builder for Northlander Timmins-Porcupine Station
The Ontario government has awarded a contract to EllisDon for construction of the Timmins-Porcupine Station, which is set to serve as the northern terminal for the Northlander passenger rail service between Timmins and Toronto. According to the Ministry of Transportation, construction is underway on the platform, parking area, and passenger waiting area as of July 14, 2025.
The Ministry of Transportation states that the station will support Northlander trains, motor coaches, and Bus Parcel Express services. Construction of this station is underway in Timmins, where it will serve as a terminal point for restored passenger rail operations along the Northlander corridor.
According to the Ministry, once construction is complete, the new station is planned to include accessible washrooms, varied seating, and a ticket counter. Outdoor features will include an accessible platform, motor coach bays, parking, pedestrian pathways, a taxi stand, and a designated area for passenger pickup and drop-off.
The Ministry of Transportation also reports that track work along the Northlander corridor is ongoing to adjust railway curves. The Ministry states that the purpose of this work is to allow trains to operate at higher speeds and with fewer disruptions.
The Ministry says that when service resumes, the Northlander will offer southbound trips departing from Timmins and northbound trips departing from Toronto, up to seven days a week based on seasonal demand. According to the Ministry, there will be 16 stops in each direction, including a rail connection to Cochrane.
Chad Evans, Chief Executive Officer of Ontario Northland, stated in the government release that the Northlander is expected to provide improved access to services and transportation connections.
The Ministry also notes that previous contracts have been awarded to reconstruct platforms and install shelters from North Bay to Cochrane, and to design and manufacture new Northlander station shelters as well as upgrade rail safety and warning systems.
