Ontario Invests in Rural Economic Development Projects
The Ontario government has announced an investment of over $5.7 million in 85 projects aimed at enhancing economic development in rural communities across the province. This funding is part of the Rural Economic Development (RED) program, which supports initiatives that aim to diversify local economies, build community capacity, and address barriers to economic growth and labor force challenges.
In Belleville, the Belleville Downtown District Business Improvement Association (BIA) will receive up to $57,427 to implement a Membership Care Program (MCP). This program is designed to connect local businesses with services to tackle challenges and provide necessary training. Additionally, the BIA plans to hold town hall meetings to facilitate communication between businesses and residents, addressing labor force issues and attracting investment.
The Corporation of Prince Edward County is set to receive $65,000 for its Workforce Development Training for Community Benefit project. This initiative aims to create a community benefits framework to develop a skilled local workforce and provide employment opportunities. The project will involve piloting the framework and subsequently rolling out training programs based on the pilot's findings.
Steve Pinsonneault, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Rural Affairs, stated that the government recognizes the importance of preparing rural Ontario for expansion through the RED program. He emphasized the commitment to supporting projects that benefit rural communities.
The RED program has committed over $27.4 million since its inception in 2019, funding 473 projects that contribute to job creation and economic growth in rural areas. The latest intake of the program closed on February 21, 2024. Public consultations are also being held to inform the development of a new Rural Economic Development Strategy.
