Open-air fire ban takes effect July 16 in Smooth Rock Falls

Fire Chief Michel Pelletier has imposed an open-air fire ban in Smooth Rock Falls, effective July 16, 2026, until further notice.

The ban follows a recommendation from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and is in response to ongoing dry conditions and an elevated risk of wildland fires, according to the Smooth Rock Falls Fire Department.

The ban applies to all open-air burning. Prohibited activities include campfires, bonfires and brush piles, as well as burning yard waste, leaves and debris, burning barrels, outdoor fireplaces and any other open-air burning activity.

Recent weather has left vegetation dry and moisture levels low, the department said, making fires easier to start and spread.

Propane or charcoal barbecues are permitted.

The ban is issued under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act.

Violations may result in fines and/or prosecution, the department said.
