Pistachio-Based Sweets Recalled in Ottawa and Vancouver Due to Salmonella Risk

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recalled several pistachio-containing sweets sold in Ontario and British Columbia due to possible Salmonella contamination. The products were sold at Alkadour Sweets and Mr. Kaak in Ottawa, and at Kamo Bakery in Vancouver.

The CFIA stated the recall is linked to an ongoing investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. The agency has advised the public not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled products.

The affected items include:

  • Pistachio Baklava (5 or 12 pieces) and Pistachio Butter Cookies (12 pieces), sold up to and including June 10, 2025, at Alkadour Sweets locations in Carlingwood Shopping Centre, Bayshore Shopping Centre, and Billings Bridge Shopping Centre, Ottawa;
  • Baklava (300 g and 600 g), sold up to and including August 8, 2025, at Mr. Kaak, 1020 Pleasant Park Road, Ottawa;
  • Pistachio Paklava, clerk-served in variable amounts, sold from April 7, 2025, to August 11, 2025, at Kamo Bakery, 5552 Victoria Drive, Vancouver.

According to the CFIA, food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can cause illness after consumption. The agency said young children, pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for serious infection. Symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Severe cases may result in complications such as arthritis.

The CFIA is continuing its food safety investigation and stated that further product recalls may take place if required. The agency also said it is verifying that industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.
