Pistachio Sweets Recalled in Nepean Due to Salmonella Risk, CFIA Reports
Several desserts containing pistachios, sold at Gwalia Sweets and Restaurant in Nepean, Ontario, have been recalled for possible Salmonella contamination, according to a warning from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued on September 10, 2025.
The CFIA reports that these products were sold clerk-served in variable quantities with no UPC codes at 1460 Merivale Rd, Unit 5, Nepean, between June 10 and July 11, 2025. The recall is part of an ongoing investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak.
The affected desserts, as listed by the CFIA, include Rasmalai, Angoori Rabdi, Sponge Rosogolla, Halwa, Gulab Jamun, Kala Jamun, Orange Coconut, and Khopra Pak. All products were offered in variable amounts without packaging codes at the Nepean location.
According to the CFIA, the recall was triggered after their investigation discovered potential Salmonella contamination. The Public Health Agency of Canada is also investigating cases of illness related to this outbreak. The CFIA states that further recalls may be issued and is verifying that affected products are removed from the market.
The CFIA advises that food contaminated with Salmonella may not appear or smell spoiled, but can still cause illness. Young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of serious infection. Symptoms reported may include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. The agency also notes that long-term complications can include severe arthritis.
The CFIA instructs that recalled products should not be consumed, used, sold, served, or distributed, and should be thrown out or returned to the place where they were purchased.
The CFIA maintains an online page for ongoing updates regarding this recall and related investigations.
