Raw overflow at Timmins’ Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant bypassed 549 cubic metres on March 9
A raw overflow occurred at the Mattagami Water Pollution Control Plant (551 Airport Road) in Timmins on March 9 from 4:04 p.m. to 5:05 p.m., with 549.035 cubic metres of wastewater bypassed.
The City of Timmins’ Environmental Services Department posted the overflow details in a public notice. The city also included general information about why bypasses happen and asked residents to reduce some household water use during rainstorms.
According to the city, municipal wastewater is about 99% water from stormwater and household and business use.
Bypasses or overflows can occur when a treatment plant or part of its process is overwhelmed, often during heavy rainfall or snowmelt, the city said.
During a bypass or overflow, partially treated wastewater may be diverted around part of the process to prevent backups or damage to the system, the city said.
The city asked residents to delay laundry, take shorter showers and limit dishwashing during rainstorms.
