Smooth Rock Falls Council Meeting Introduces Key Policy Changes
The Town Council of Smooth Rock Falls convened on March 17, 2025, deciding on several key changes and resolutions impacting the community.
A notable amendment approved during the meeting involved the Beautify Smooth Rock Falls project, which now includes the planting of two paper birch trees at Kelly Park to enhance its aesthetic appeal.
Changes were also made to municipal property transaction policies, requiring a 100% non-refundable deposit as part of the purchase agreements. Further discussions on this subject are expected to continue on April 22, 2025.
In terms of advocacy resolutions, the council showed support for a resolution from the Town of Halton Hills, known as the Sovereignty of Canada Resolution, acknowledging the role of municipalities in national matters. Additionally, the council backed a resolution from the City of Sarnia opposing the proposed 20% increase in the Federal Carbon Tax, citing potential economic concerns.
The council committed to the Stand for Canada Campaign, indicating an emphasis on sourcing Canadian-made goods within municipal procurement processes.
During this session, several by-laws were enacted, which included the 2025 Budget approval, an adjustment to property tax ratios leading to a 10% increase, the appointment of a Community Emergency Management Coordinator, and the repeal of specific by-laws relating to the appointments of a By-Law Enforcement Officer and Deputy Clerk.
The next council meeting is scheduled for April 22, 2025, where further discussion on municipal policies, including property deposit requirements, is anticipated.
