Smooth Rock Falls expects Sixth Street excavation to start soon, with section-by-section closures

Excavation is expected to begin soon on Sixth Street in Smooth Rock Falls as part of a watermain and sanitary sewer rehabilitation project, with the road to be closed in stages within the active work area between Fifth Street and Maple Avenue.

For residents and drivers, the main changes will be shifting road closures and limits on through-traffic as construction moves along the street. The Town of Smooth Rock Falls’ construction update says only local traffic will be permitted through the construction zone.

The work area includes Sixth Street from Fifth Street to Maple Avenue. The town says the project involves replacing the existing watermain and sanitary sewer infrastructure along that stretch.

As construction progresses, Sixth Street is to be closed systematically within the active work area, with the contractor advancing through the project area in sections. The town’s update describes the work sequence as excavation followed by backfilling and roadway reinstatement.

Residents should expect temporary road access restrictions when construction is occurring directly in front of their property. The town says affected residents will be advised of temporary driveway or access restrictions as required.

According to the town’s timeline, underground construction and roadway reinstatement work in 2026 is expected to continue into early October, with cleanup currently scheduled for Oct. 9.

Final above-ground restoration is scheduled for 2027, including concrete curbs, sidewalks, asphalt paving and landscaping.
