Smooth Rock Falls Marks Treaties Recognition Week
The Town of Smooth Rock Falls is observing Treaties Recognition Week from November 3-9, 2024. This event, established in 2016 by Ontario legislation, aims to enhance awareness of treaty rights and relationships among residents and students. The week is part of Ontario's efforts towards reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. The James Bay Treaty (Treaty No. 9), signed in 1905-1906, is a significant focus. It involves agreements between the Ojibway, Cree, and other Indigenous Nations with the Crown, covering a large portion of Ontario's landmass.
