Smooth Rock Falls posts councillor role guide ahead of Oct. 26, 2026 municipal vote

Smooth Rock Falls has posted an election information graphic outlining the responsibilities of council members under Ontario’s Municipal Act, 2001, ahead of the municipal election scheduled for Oct. 26, 2026.

In the Sept. 18 post, the town described the “Did You Know?” and “Myth vs. Fact” series as public education meant to explain how municipal government works, including who makes decisions, who directs municipal staff, and what happens after council makes a decision.

The post includes an infographic titled “The role of a councillor.” It lists seven responsibilities of council (including each councillor) under the Municipal Act, 2001.

Among the responsibilities listed are representing the public and considering the well-being and interests of the municipality, and developing and evaluating municipal policies and programs.

Another responsibility listed is determining which services the municipality provides.

The infographic also states that council is responsible for ensuring administrative policies, practices and procedures and “controllership” policies, practices and procedures are in place to implement council decisions.

It also lists ensuring the accountability and transparency of the operations of the municipality, including the activities of the senior management of the municipality.

The remaining items include maintaining the municipality’s financial integrity and carrying out council’s duties under the Municipal Act, 2001 or any other Act.

The town said it will share more election-related posts in the coming weeks that outline municipal roles, explain the decision-making process, and provide information about voting. In the same post, the town described the series as non-partisan and said it is not about any particular candidate or member of council.
