Smooth Rock Falls says it received up to $50,000 for wildland fire response equipment

The Town of Smooth Rock Falls says it has been awarded up to $50,000 through Ontario’s Community Emergency Preparedness Grant Program to buy equipment for wildland fire response, according to a July 14 news release.

The funding is earmarked for the town’s Wildland Fire Preparedness Project, which the release links to what it describes as increasing wildfire risk across Northern Ontario.

The Community Emergency Preparedness Grant Program is administered by Ontario’s Ministry of Emergency Preparedness and Response.

According to the release, the project includes buying emergency response equipment for wildfire operations for the Smooth Rock Falls Fire Department. The town listed communication tools, generators, water pumps and portable lighting among the planned purchases.

In a statement included in the release, Mayor Patrick Roberts said the funding “will help ensure our Fire Department is better equipped to respond quickly and effectively to wildland fire emergencies.”

The town did not provide a timeline for when the equipment would be purchased.
