Life satisfaction among Canadians has been declining, according to a study released by Statistics Canada. The report uses data from the Canadian Social Survey (CSS) collected from April 2021 to March 2024.

Key findings from the study include:

  • Life Satisfaction: In 2024, only 48.6% of Canadians aged 15 years and older reported high life satisfaction, a decrease from 54.0% in 2021.
  • Hopefulness: The proportion of Canadians feeling hopeful about the future dropped from 65.0% in 2021 to 59.7% in 2024.
  • Demographic Variations: Younger adults (aged 25 to 34) experienced significant declines in life satisfaction, averaging a drop of 3.9 percentage points per year. In contrast, seniors (aged 65 and older) maintained a higher level of satisfaction, with 61.5% reporting happiness in 2024.
  • Financial Difficulties: The study noted an increase in financial difficulties, with 32.8% of Canadians facing challenges in 2024 compared to 18.6% in 2021. Those experiencing financial insecurity reported lower life satisfaction levels.
