Statistics Canada Reports on Journeypersons’ Earnings and Mobility
Income and Mobility Analysis for Journeypersons in 2022
According to recent data from Statistics Canada, newly certified journeypersons in 2022 earned a median income of $56,580 one year post-certification, reflecting a 1.0% increase from the previous year.
The report highlights variations across different trades. For instance, welders have seen their incomes surpass pre-pandemic levels, an indication of specific demand in the labor market. In contrast, ironworkers and early childhood educators continue to earn below their pre-pandemic levels.
In terms of mobility, 5.8% of newly certified journeypersons chose to live or work outside their original certification jurisdiction in 2022. This marks the first increase in interprovincial mobility since 2013, primarily due to eased COVID-19 travel restrictions.
British Columbia and Ontario have been identified as preferred destinations for these individuals, with British Columbia particularly showing a positive net migration among new journeypersons.
