Temporary GST/HST Relief Announced for Holiday Essentials

The Canadian government has announced a temporary tax relief measure affecting Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on certain items. This initiative is set to take place from December 14, 2024, to February 15, 2025. During this period, GST/HST will be removed from holiday essentials, including groceries, restaurant meals, drinks, snacks, children's clothing, and gifts.

The government estimates that this tax relief will provide approximately $1.6 billion in federal tax savings. For example, a family spending $2,000 on qualifying goods could save $100 in GST. In provinces where HST is also removed, such as Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, the savings could be higher. In Ontario, the same $2,000 expenditure could result in $260 in HST savings.

Businesses are expected to implement this tax relief at checkout during the specified period. The government has stated that this measure aims to provide financial relief to Canadians during the holiday season.
