Timmins approves $4.95M plus HST contract to line Riverside Drive watermains, rehab South Porcupine section
Timmins city council has approved a $4,950,000 plus HST contract with Fer-Pal Construction Ltd. to line watermains along Riverside Drive from Shirley Street to the Mattagami River Bridge, and to rehabilitate a smaller watermain section in an easement between Shamrock Avenue and Dome Avenue in South Porcupine.
The work is being prioritized ahead of Connecting Link construction planned for 2027 and 2028, which is expected to take place along a key transportation corridor in Timmins.
Watermain lining is a rehabilitation method that places a liner inside an existing pipe. The method does not require excavation and may reduce traffic disruption compared with full pipe replacement.
In addition to lining the existing watermains, the contract includes installing new water valves for system control and new hydrants for fire protection.
The city said the South Porcupine watermain is considered critical because its age and location are unknown.
Timmins maintains about 221,000 metres of watermain infrastructure. The city says 8,140 metres—about 3.7%—have been rehabilitated using lining methods.
The city has not provided a start date. The city said it will release timelines and potential traffic impacts once start dates are set.
