Timmins City Council Approves New By-law for Short-Term Rentals
The Timmins City Council has approved a new Short-Term Accommodation By-law to regulate properties used for short-term stays. This by-law requires all short-term accommodations to be licensed as a business within the city. It aims to ensure compliance with property and occupancy standards, as well as health and safety regulations.
The by-law is set to take effect on January 14, 2025. Property owners will be required to collect the Municipal Transient Accommodation Tax (MAT) from guests, aligning with existing municipal tax policies.
Mayor Michelle Boileau noted that the by-law encourages long-term rental agreements and ensures property standards are maintained. This regulation addresses the increasing trend of vacation rental services, where homeowners rent out their residences for periods of less than 28 consecutive days.
The council's decision is part of an effort to provide municipal oversight and manage the impact of short-term rentals on the community.
