Timmins commits $2M over four years for hospital ER redevelopment

The City of Timmins will contribute $2 million over four years to redevelop the Timmins and District Hospital emergency department, a commitment approved in the 2025 municipal budget and announced Oct. 10.

The Ontario government has announced plans to expand the department up to four times its current size. The project will add more than 27,000 square feet, increase patient capacity, and include space for dedicated emergency mental health care.

“Council’s early investment of $2 million reflects our commitment to help ensure that residents have access to excellent emergency care where and when they need it,” Mayor Michelle Boileau said in the city’s statement.

The allocation will be made over the next four years under the 2025 budget. In its statement, the city called the contribution “one of the first major donations” to the project.

“I want to thank the Ontario government and specifically Minister George Pirie and Minister Sylvia Jones for their leadership and support,” Boileau said.

The province previously announced the planned renovation and expansion of the hospital’s emergency department.

The city also listed other health-related initiatives, including support for physician recruitment through Timmins Economic Development, continued funding for the TADH Medical Specialist Building, and the redevelopment of the Golden Manor long-term care facility.

The city did not say when construction would begin.
