Timmins council approves contracts for Evans Street bridge replacement and Golden Avenue bridge repairs in South Porcupine

Timmins city council has approved two bridge contracts in South Porcupine—one to replace the Evans Street bridge and another to rehabilitate the Golden Avenue bridge—according to a City of Timmins news release posted March 25.

The city said there is no direct detour for the Evans Street bridge during construction and traffic will be maintained using temporary signals and related safety measures.

The city said it hired Urbanlink Civil Ltd. to replace the Evans Street bridge for $5,107,850 plus HST. The city said the bridge is used by residents and heavy truck traffic.

Regular inspections found deterioration in structural elements on the west side of the bridge, the city said. The city said traffic was temporarily shifted to the east side to reduce stress on the west side and slow deterioration.

The replacement bridge is planned as a single-span concrete box girder structure with a new sidewalk and barrier wall.

The city said the design is intended to improve water flow beneath the bridge and reduce the risk of blockages during spring runoff.

Construction is planned over two years, with the west side of the bridge built first.

For the Golden Avenue bridge, the city said council approved a rehabilitation contract to MCA Contracting Ltd. in the amount of “$684.526.41” plus HST. The city’s release listed the figure with periods.

Routine inspections identified several areas needing repair, the city said. The city said the contract includes removal and replacement of asphalt and waterproofing, repairs to culvert walls and footings, reconstruction of the approach road base, and upgrades to guiderails and other safety features.

The city said it will provide further updates as construction timelines and traffic instructions are confirmed.
